Under the visionary leadership of the former Vice-Chancellor, Prof. E. I. C. Ezekwe, the department began its academic journey within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Over the years, it has evolved and thrived through multiple institutional transitions, including the renaming of the university to Anambra State University (ANSU) in 2005, and finally to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU) in 2014.
