The Department of English has its roots in the prestigious Anambra State University of Science and Technology (ASUTECH), which was established in Uli on January 11, 2001. Under the visionary leadership of the former Vice-Chancellor, Prof. E. I. C. Ezekwe, the department began its academic journey within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Over the years, it has evolved and thrived through multiple institutional transitions, including the renaming of the university to Anambra State University (ANSU) in 2005, and finally to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU) in 2014.

It was fully accredited in 2006 and has maintained its accreditation status through rigorous evaluations, most recently in 2022. With a team of eighteen academic staff, including six professors, the department has steadily grown in manpower, teaching quality, and research output.
