The Department of English has its roots in the prestigious Anambra State University of Science and Technology (ASUTECH), which was established in Uli on January 11, 2001. Under the visionary leadership of the former Vice-Chancellor, Prof. E. I. C. Ezekwe, the department began its academic journey within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Over the years, it has evolved and thrived through multiple institutional transitions, including the renaming of the university to Anambra State University (ANSU) in 2005, and finally to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU) in 2014.
Since its inception, the department has achieved remarkable milestones. It was fully accredited in 2006 and has maintained its accreditation status through rigorous evaluations, most recently in 2022. With a team of eighteen academic staff, including six professors, the department has steadily grown in manpower, teaching quality, and research output.
At COOU’s Department of English, students are offered two major areas of specialization: Language and Literature. These areas are supported by a dedicated faculty that is passionate about imparting knowledge and nurturing talent. The department boasts state-of-the-art facilities, including an equipped Language Laboratory, which enhances the learning experience for students in a second-language environment like Nigeria.
The department’s academic programs—from the B.A. in English to postgraduate degrees (PGD, M.A., and PhD)—are regularly reviewed to ensure they meet the highest standards. The recent adoption of the Nigerian Universities Commission’s (NUC) CCMAS curriculum has further strengthened the department’s capacity to deliver a robust education.
