Sir Chijioke Okoye

Sir Chijioke Okoye is the current Head of the Department of History & International Studies. A seasoned scholar and respected historian, he brings a wealth of academic and administrative experience to the department. His leadership is centered on fostering critical thinking, promoting historical research, and expanding the department’s role in shaping informed global citizens.

With a deep commitment to academic excellence, Sir Okoye is steering the department toward greater visibility in international discourse, while also preserving and interpreting Nigeria’s rich historical legacy. His vision ensures that students not only learn history but are also equipped to contribute meaningfully to the global community.

Milestones and Achievements

  • Established in 2017: Created during the 101st Senate meeting of COOU.
  • Pioneer Academic Staff: Included Prof. Cynado Ezeogidi, Dr. Ozioma Uchime, and Mrs. Esther Okezie, with later additions like Prof. Ngozi Ojiakor and Prof. Dan Chukwu.
  • Student Growth: Expanded from 17 pioneer students to over 1,000 enrolled students.
  • Postgraduate Program Launch: Introduced PGD and M.A. programs in the 2022/2023 academic session.
  • COOU International Journal: Published the International Journal of Humanities, Social Sciences, and Global Affairs.
  • 1st International Conference: Hosted in April 2024 on “Democracy, Protest, and Governance in Nigeria’s Fourth Republic.”
  • Academic Excellence: Produced top graduates including Kurume Chinonso Christian and Omenife Grace Amarachi.
  • Sporting Achievement: Won the Dean’s Cup in 2021.

The department has been guided by visionary leadership since inception, with Prof. Cynado C.N.O Ezeogidi as the pioneer Head of Department and current Dean. His dynamic leadership continues to drive the department’s growth in both academic and research spheres.

Admission Requirements and Procedures

Undergraduate Admission Requirements:
  • UTME candidates must possess credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, and Government/History/CRK/Literature in English/Igbo.
  • Direct Entry candidates must have relevant A’ Level papers, ND, or HND with required grades.
Postgraduate Admission Requirements:
  • A minimum of five O’Level credits including English and relevant subjects.
  • Completion of NYSC or presentation of an exemption certificate.
